I started my career the day after I graduated from Shelbyville High School, working for what was then the largest company in the world: General Motors. Forty-five years later, I will end my career working for the largest company in the world: Amazon.
In between there have been a few more companies and adventures across the country—epic achievements and a few disappointments. Here are the stories.
Work is not always glamorous. I always say the gold nuggets are hidden behind one of the 10,000 rocks you have to move to find them. There is no easy way around spending thousands of hours in meeting rooms and conference rooms, interviewing people, and walking through factories.
When I began so long ago, I worked at a desk in a bullpen office with 200 other people—a phone on the desk and a hundred file cabinets along the wall. I will finish working alone at a desk, surrounded by five computers and spending eight hours on video calls every day.
